ASD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition, that affects bahaviour and sensory processing and is characterised by impaired social interaction, communication difficulties and repetitive, stereotypical behaviours, as well as special interests. Autism spectrum disorders may display with and without impaired language and with and without intellectual disability. It cannot be prevented, but early intervention can help children and adolescents with ASD reach their full potential. Strategies include early and frequent developmental screenings and parental training. Support may include speech therapy, occupational therapy, educational interventions, and psychological support.
